Limits to management adaptation for the Indus’ irrigated agriculture

چکیده
Future irrigated agriculture will be strongly affected by climate change and agricultural management. However, the extent that management adaptation can counterbalance negative climate-change impacts achieve sustainable production remains poorly quantified. Such quantification is especially important for Indus basin, as essential its food security highly increasing temperatures changing water availability. Our study quantified these effects several mitigation scenarios management-adaptation strategies using state-of-the-art VIC-WOFOST hydrology–crop model. results show 2030s, through improved nutrient availability constrained irrigation sufficient to increased production. 2080s productivity depend on worldwide efforts. Especially under limited mitigation, insufficient compensate severe losses due heat stress. clearly indicates limits in only further or strong secure Indus’ productivity.

MCDM farm system analysis for public management of irrigated agriculture
In this paper we present a methodology within the multi-criteria paradigm to assist policy decision-making on water management for irrigation. In order to predict farmers’ response to policy changes a separate multi-attribute utility function for each homogeneous group, attained applying cluster analysis, is elicited. The results of several empirical applications of this methodology suggest an ...
متن کاملDrainwater Management for Salinity Mitigation in Irrigated Agriculture
Salinity and drainage management options include source control, reuse, and evaporation ponds. This article identifies efficient strategies to maintain hydrologic balance in closed drainage basins and evaluates their impact on regional agricultural profits. Theoretical analysis suggests that economic efficiency requires acknowledgment of the nonseparability between water use and land value. Emp...
متن کاملSpatial quantification of groundwater abstraction in the irrigated Indus basin.
Groundwater abstraction and depletion were assessed at a 1-km resolution in the irrigated areas of the Indus Basin using remotely sensed evapotranspiration (ET) and precipitation; a process-based hydrological model and spatial information on canal water supplies. A calibrated Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to derive total annual irrigation applied in the irrigated areas of...
متن کاملWastewater Use in Irrigated Agriculture: Management Challenges in Developing Countries
Cities in developing countries are experiencing unparalleled growth and rapidly increasing water supply and sanitation coverage that will continue to release growing volumes of wastewater. In many developing countries, untreated or partially treated wastewater is used to irrigate the cities’ own food, fodder, and green spaces. Farmers have been using untreated wastewater for centuries, but grea...
